Telling the Tale of One Koku

One Koku and Tell the Tale. Arguably two of L5R’s most underrated cards in Emperor Edition. Looking into current competition decks, no one in their right mind would splash these two cards, full play sets being high unlikely. But like it or not, these two cards provide an honour running deck with huge flexibility and guaranteed gains. Let’s take a quick look at these two misfits:

Exhibit 1

I hazard to say that this card is way better than Favors. Yes, it nets 1 honour less than the rare card, but Tell the Tale has one big advantage over Favors: No one is bowing to perform it. Or to be more specific: there is no cost. The other advantage of gaining 1 honour is that it is so hard to prevent. I bet nobody is going to burn Deeds and Words to prevent Tell the Tale from getting its honour, or even play Rethoric.

At the end of the day, people will only prevent big gains so that they feel their action is worth it. So those small 1 honour gains will trickle in and it will still contribute to your winning condition. You’d be surprised how fast you’ll run with 3 of these in your deck.

Exhibit 2

This card is even more baffling than Tell the Tale. There is more to it than just sending it in for koku redemption. Albeit, I only find this card useful when I’m packing 1 gc holdings in the deck, as well as 1 gc items like the Chrysanthemum Blossom. For holdings, using this card provides a huge tempo shift especially if you run across it on your first turn.  Spending your Border Keep to buy Well-tended Farm might leave a bad taste in your mouth, but One Koku gives you the flexibility to buy other stuff that you might need. Rounding an odd costed personality can also be handy at times. Or even filling in that final gold to draw with Traveling Peddler.

The biggest advantage that I can see though, is that when it’s used in your action phase, it’s a card. It contributes to putting down Ring of the Void as well. Which is always a good thing.

Okay, I think there’s enough pre-Kotei muse to keep my own brain gears spinning as I finalize my deck to bring to the tournament. I have no illusion that it’ll be an unstoppable juggernaut of win, but at least I’ll turn more than a few heads with my off the wall and “suboptimal” choices. It should be fun 🙂 Now I gotta complete my cosplay stuff before the week is done.
